TISSUE CULTURE DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

Background
Verdant is a young company established in 2013 with a vision to develop high yielding, high quality planting material in oil palm and rubber through the application of sound practices based on scientific innovation in plant breeding. The approach is to fuse traditional breeding strategies
with the latest methods in genetics and biotechnology. The breeding work is supported by
specialised laboratories in Cell Biology, Genomics, Tissue Culture, Pollen, Plant and Soil
Nutrition, Bunch and Oil, Agronomy, Crop Protection and Seed Production. Field facilities include
extensive Nurseries, Seed Gardens and Trials (trial sites are also located at various locations across Indonesia). It is the aim of the company to use its existing and rapidly developing Intellectual
Property (IP) to develop superior varieties that not only have outstanding yield, but are resistant to
both biotic and abiotic stresses, while at the same time meeting new market demands.

Main function
Work as part of an integrated team to help ensure that all designated Tissue Culture programmes run smoothly and meet objectives and to take specific responsibilities as noted below.

Placement: North Sumatera

Responsibilities
• Collaborate with Head of Tissue Culture Section on all aspects of Tissue Culture.
• Responsible for monitoring procedures in tissue culture.
• Responsible for the tissue culture database, ensuring new data are regularly uploaded, data are
interrogated, summaries/presentations produced, problems identified and acted upon.
• Work in a team and take responsibility for various research and development programmes including the development of protocols, modified techniques, and propose new experiments with a focus on improving oil palm tissue culture.
• Collaborate with other Sections and Departments, particularly Breeding and Biotechnology in developing efficient strategies to meet goals.
• Remain updated on current state of appropriate tissue culture and in vitro techniques and methods and introduce changes.
• Ensure maximum efficiency in the various in vitro steps in the production of cultures, embryos, plantlets and plants.
• Ensure security of valuable plant materials and equipment.

Requirements
• Minimum education: Bachelor degree with a major in Biology/Plant Science/Agriculture/Biotechnology.
• Experience in Plant Tissue Culture would be an advantage, but training will be given.
• Exposure to applicable database systems, computer technologies and software applications (e.g., statistical and presentation software).
• Fluency in English (written and spoken).
